ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Robert Hayden began studying the violin at age 10. A few years later he participated in the New York State School of Orchestral Studies where he was tutored by Norman Carroll, former concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Throughout his high school career Mr. Hayden performed in numerous orchestras and music festivals and also participated in a European tour at age 16. At 17 he received a perfect score at the New York State School Music Association’s annual competition. Later that year he was selected to attend the illustrious Tanglewood Institute as a member of the Young Artists Orchestra where he performed under world- renowned conductors including Seiji Ozawa and Andre Previn. After high school he pursued a Music Performance degree at Boston University where he studied with Yuri Mazurkevich.

During the mid 1990’s Mr. Hayden took a break from classical music to pursue his interests in songwriting. He performed at numerous clubs in the Boston area, including Club Passim, and was frequently afforded the opportunity to open sets for both local and national artists such as Jen Trynin and Hamell on Trial. He also released a solo CD in 1999.

In 2005 Mr. Hayden relocated to New York City where he served as the Concertmaster of the Greenwich Village Orchestra from 2009-2014. Highlights from his tenure with the GVO included a performance of Sheherazade in 2010 as well as serving as the featured soloist during a performance of the Khachaturian violin concerto in 2012, a performance which won him rave reviews from several New York concert reviewers. Mr. Hayden also served as featured soloist for the Brandenburg players, as well as serving as Principal Second Violin of the New York Concerti Sinfonietta led by Per Brevig. He also performed with the Chelsea Symphony and made his Carnegie Hall debut, performing the Debussy String Quartet in 2010.

Currently Mr. Hayden resides in West Seattle where he continues to devote himself to music performance and education.
